The surgeons of the UT Medicine Medical and Surgical Weight Loss Center are nationally recognized and fellowship-trained, specializing in both advanced and basic laparoscopic (minimally invasive) procedures.

Our extensive experience and training program in bariatric surgery since the 1980s maintains our team in the forefront of an exciting new era. UT Medicine Surgery continues to be the provider of choice for patients and doctors in South and Central Texas. Our bariatric weight loss team provides exemplary care in terms of safety, expertise and compassion. Patients are cared for by a multidisciplinary team before, during and after surgery. Safety outcomes exceed national averages for bariatric surgical procedures. Our team approach to caring for our patients does not end after successful surgery and weight loss. We continue to care for our patients in the years to come, finding special joy in the reward of the additional productive and vital years that surgical weight loss brings to our patients' lives.

Our UT Medicine surgeons are led by Wayne Schwesinger, MD, Professor of Surgery. In a recent survey of San Antonio physicians, Dr. Schwesinger was selected as the surgeon these physicians would choose for themselves as well as for their families.

 

 

Our mission

UT Medicine Medical and Surgical Weight Loss Center will work to improve the quality of life of individuals who suffer from morbid obesity, and to prevent or control the complications associated with this disorder. We will use a comprehensive, multidisciplinary program to evaluate, support, educate and treat morbidly obese patients and provide a variety of state-of-the-art bariatric surgical procedures for carefully selected candidates.
